Sailing: Newport, Rhode Island

NEWPORT Ė THE OFF SEASON IS ON IN 2018

IRISH TRAVEL & CULTURE MAGAZINE
FALL/WINTER 2017-18

It’s hard to decide if Newport is best known for being the Sailing Capital of the World or for its legendary Gilded Age mansions, but this coastal New England enclave offers extraordinary experiences the whole year through. Though summer may steal the spotlight, locals are ready to let you in on a closely guarded secret: the off season is on!

There’s a palpable elation throughout the City by the Sea during Christmas in Newport, a month-long celebration toasting simple traditions of the holiday season. Approaching its 47th year, events are tailored to entertain every age, including festive tree lightings, train rides, historical tours, shopping strolls, concerts and dances, Victorian-era Christmas customs, culinary fêtes, arts and cultural celebrations and more.

Touted as “New England’s Largest Winter Extravaganza,” the festival features 150+ events ranging from children’s fairs and princess parties to culinary cook-offs, concerts and cocktail competitions. Throughout the event, savor the Newport Burger Bender, a friendly contest featuring America’s favorite comfort food.

March welcomes Irish Heritage Month, highlighted by the 62nd Annual Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Newport- Kinsale Chef Exchange which welcomes guest chefs and restaurateurs from Kinsale, the “Gourmet Capital of Ireland.” (Now you can fly directly to Cork in addition to three other destinations in Ireland, plus the U.K. and Scotland for less on Norwegian Air from Rhode Island’s T.F. Green Airport.)

Newport Cliff Walk during Daffodil Festival

Just in time for spring is the Newport Daffodil Days Festival with myriad events toasting the nearly one million daffodil blooms citywide. By May, the Volvo Ocean Race returns to Newport – the grueling sailing race that circles the globe.  As the only stopover in North America, Newport’s reputation as the Sailing Capital of the World comes alive during 10 days of waterfront festivities.
