THE SPORTING LIFE

New England is fortunate to have a vibrant sporting scene, ranging from our professional sports teams and collegiate programs to plenty of grass roots and seasonal sports.

Let’s start with the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), which formed in Ireland in the late 19th century to perpetuate the country’s ancient games such as hurling, camogie and Irish football.

Today, 45 GAA clubs compete in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine and Rhode Island. You can follow these exciting matches and championship tournaments each summer at the Irish Cultural Centre (ICC) in Canton. In addition, the ICC hosts a variety of youth and adult rugby and soccer games at its state-of-the-art fields in Canton, part of a 46-acre campus, pictured above, that also includes Tree Top Adventures for climbing and zip-lining.

Newport, RI, home of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the newly opened Sailing Museum, offers world-class tennis, sailing and polo games and tournaments throughout the summer, and plenty of recreational space to hike, swim, run or just enjoy the magnificent coast.

Add to that road races and golf tournaments, and you’ll appreciate that there is something for every New England sports lover in 2023.
